In Germany, civil defense and protection is mostly carried out by volunteers. Nearly 1.7 million people have undergone training to help in civil protection. They are organised and take part in training events and exercises. Established in 2009, the national award 'Förderpreis Helfende Hand' rewards the best ideas and projects that motivate young talents to become civil defense and protection volunteers.
