“Changing our future narratives: what can designers learn from science fiction?”
By Magda Mojsiejuk (Futury Systems)

Futures envisioned by film, TV, video games, and music have inspired cosmic adventures, utopias, cautionary tales, and valuable insights into achieving the once impossible. These mediums birthed genres like alternative histories, afrofuturism, and gender utopias, serving us as “imagination starter kits” for innovators (like you) shaping our real world. What can we extract from science fiction to enhance our daily design and problem-solving practices? Magda Mojsiejuk, a former set designer turned into creator of future artifacts, offers a unique perspective. By analyzing past and current science fiction works, she demonstrates how they shape our visions of the future (desired and undesirable) and their relevance to creative design. She uses examples like InTENSE, a 2030+ lifestyle magazine, and other products by Futurity Systems that turn incredible futures into tangible, practical solutions.
