This ZEITmagazin's June 2020 cover story presents the work of the photographer Ingmar Björn Nolting. He was 25 years old then and spent two months driving 9,000 kilometres around Germany to document how the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic was affecting everyday life. The 19 photographs in this spread, accompanied by short captions and an interview, capture the feelings of isolation, improvisation, and fear triggered by that moment in history.
