All satellite and cable providers took Rain TV – Russia’s only independent TV-channel – off air in 2014 because of an order from ‘above’. Since 2015 Putin has promised to help Rain TV ease the censorship burden. But the miracle hasn't happened. So Rain TV, which continues broadcasting through paid subscriptions, launched an action: anyone could watch Rain TV 24 h if they showed a portrait of Mr Putin to a webcam. Over two weeks the station received more than 3.9 % of new subscribers!
