In 2017 Portugal witnessed its deadliest ever wildfire. To prevent this from happening again, the Portugal’s President challenged the Portuguese not to let the tragedy be forgotten. To this end, a charred tree from the fire was turned upside down – like a root – and a small pine tree planted inside, symbolizing the hope for a greener country. Named the ‘The Tree of Hope’, this Christmas icon this started a national movement.
