Millions of people worldwide are affected by visual impairment, which often limits their ability to perform everyday tasks such as reading. Moreover, there is a trend focused on standardizing legibility through uniform adjustments, but this approach often overlooks the individual needs of each reader. Every reader and context is different, so legibility should not be based on fixed parameters; it requires personalization to effectively meet diverse needs. Understanding this, we recognized the need for a methodology and typographic design that adapts to each user, ensuring inclusivity regardless of their abilities.
Frecuencias Divergentes (Divergent Frequencies) addresses visual impairment in reading by redefining legibility beyond the norm. The result is Ivy Flex, a parametric typeface that adapts to various visual conditions. With five adjustable variables — weight, width, contrast, m-formula, and x-height — Ivy Flex allows for precise adjustments, creating customized adaptations for each user and context.
This approach leverages and enhances the capabilities of each individual, improving reading performance, while also potentially aiding in more accurate studies by controlling variables more effectively than current methods. Ivy Flex is a versatile design that balances functionality and aesthetics, with the potential to improve the quality of life for many people, in both print and digital formats.
