“Vignette: Memories of Baruu” is a 3D photography simulator and hidden-object game set in a Ghibli-esque world, with core gameplay centered around a unique mechanic that detects “what” the player is photographing. NPCs assign quests that typically involve finding specific objects or locations, capturing them in a photo, and returning to complete the task. While the mechanics are simple, the true depth of “Vignette” comes from the creative freedom players have in designing their photos and the personal stories that unfold as they progress through the quests. This makes the game easy to pick up for beginners while offering a familiar experience for long-time photographers.
Beneath the surface, however, something darker looms – the end of the world is approaching. In the world of Baruu, not everyone has fulfilled their dreams, and some will need the player’s help to achieve their goals before they can accept their fate. Many of the game’s characters offer special quests for the player to complete, all of them using the camera in creative ways.
Some of the quests include…rn…helping the postman make his final deliveries by snapping a picture of the package at its destination.rn…joining a wanderer on their last journey, uncovering forgotten locations as you capture them on film.rn…decyphering a child’s bad crayon drawings to help them reunite with their lost grandma.
Its inspirations include games like “Umurangi Generations”, “SEASON: A letter to the future” and “Spiritfarer”, but of course also the works of Hayao Miyazaki, specifically movies like “Kiki’s Delivery Service” or “Princess Mononoke”.
