South Australian | VR Diving Experience

Task:rnThe task was to create a virtual reality experience in which the story of the “South Australian” shipwreck is told and its remains can be explored on a virtual dive. The VRE was to be designed for an exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum and therefore for a broad target group.rnThe scientific material of the archaeologists and the supervising professor’s graphic novel based on it were to be integrated.

Idea:rnThe students decided not only to concentrate on the staging of the wreck, but also to create a captivating narrative. In the course of the experience, visitors should be able to put themselves in the shoes of both the archaeologists and the crew of the time.rnThe VRE should be user-friendly in order to cater to different technical affinities. Independent research should arouse curiosity and make learning fun.

Solution:rnThe experience is divided into four parts. The tension is built up gradually and begins with the emotional narrative of the sinking in animated comic dioramas. It builds through the main part of the application, where you can explore underwater artifacts and a high-resolution 3D scan of the wreck using gamification. Finally, you enter the deck of the reconstructed ship.rnAll you have to do to control it is point at objects with a VR controller.
