Grundtvig Typeface is an experimental typographic inspired by the iconic Grundtvig Kirke in Copenhagen, Denmark. This typeface draws from distinctive elements of the church’s west facade, including the verticality of its structure, the stepped gable contours, and the arches of the entrances. The design is characterized by bold, geometric forms that reflect the building’s strong lines and shapes, establishing a creative bridge between typographic design and architecture.
To showcase the Grundtvig Typeface, a Typographic Specimen was developed as an editorial piece that illustrates its conceptual foundation, sources of inspiration, and accompanying artworks. The elongated format of the specimen aligns with the typography, while the vibrant orange hue references the tiles adorning the roof of the Grundtvig Church. The treatment of the images echoes the stepped silhouette of the typeface, creating a cohesive visual narrative.
Additionally, a more experimental specimen was created that captures the essence of the church’s west facade, designed to appear as though it has been extruded. This concept is realized through a series of six methacrylate sheets, each displaying the alphabet, the underlying grid, or the conceptual framework individually.
