Brief: rnTell the story of Colonia Güell (a textile town in Catalonia) in a new way. The problem is that its story has always been told through a human-centric perspective, especially through Gaudi’s perspective. However, Gaudi’s architectures at the town is not Colonia Güell just like Sagrada Familia is not Barcelona. So what is the narrative of the town that hasn’t been discovered?
Proposal:rn‘Unwoven Memories’ is a project translating memories of objects from Colonia Güell into a new form of ‘language’ – coded textile, for the town to ‘weave’ its own story this time.
Through a meticulous process involving 260 objects from 26 areas of the town (public and personal spaces), each subjected to a series of binary questions, the physical and emotional essence of these items is captured in a matrix of ‘0s’ and ‘1s.’ This pattern weaves the story by assigning ‘0’ as one type of knot and ‘1’ as another. The resulting woven textiles, representing different town areas, collectively form a captivating tapestry that pulsates with the collective memories of Colonia Güell, brought to life through an audiovisual experience.rnThis project doesn’t stop at textiles; it extends its methodology into the realm of other ‘languages’. The binary codes are transformed into JavaScript, creating an animated line connecting the ‘1s’ to form the foundational structure of English characters. This unique approach generates a new typography design, visually weaving together the memories of specific 26 areas – 26 English characters.
“Unwoven Memories” stands as a new methodology to spotlight the hidden beauty within our everyday surroundings, inviting viewers to move away from human-centric perspective to rediscover the world and appreciate the interconnected stories embedded in the objects that shape our realities.
