Where one of Spain’s most spectacular mountain ranges meets the sea, Divino emerges as a project deeply rooted in history, art, and environmental preservation. The name ‘Divino’ combines the Spanish word “divino,” meaning ‘heavenly’ or ‘divine,’ and the “vino,” meaning wine.
Divino is not just a wine; it’s a statement about the fragility and importance of the Alt Emporda region. It aims to raise awareness about the local residents’ fight against the construction of a large-scale wind farm on the Cap de Creus coast, a site of rich biodiversity and part of the Natura 2000 protected areas network designated by the European Union. It emphasizes that even green energy projects are not always sustainable if they threaten ecologically sensitive areas.
The design of the bottle with blown glass is inspired by Roman amphorae found in local archaeological sites, alluding to the region’s historical heritage. It also takes inspiration from the works of the local surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, known for the use of soft, fluid forms in the representation of religious themes and landscapes. The bottle was actually submerged in the Mediterranean Sea for 40 days before its consumption, a symbolic reference to the 40 days Jesus Christ spent on Earth before ascending to heaven, elevating the wine to divine status in this ode to the Mediterranean. To test the feasibility of submerging blown glass, two additional prototype bottles were made and photographed after being submerged in the sea.
In line with sustainability, the bottle is made from 100% recycled borosilicate glass. Its label is crafted from Posidonia seaweed (formerly known as glassmaker’s seaweed), collected from the coast, with information laser-engraved to avoid the use of inks. Divino is a wine that not only represents the land but becomes part of it, highlighting the symbiosis between nature and culture.
